All kinds of hybrid trucks and cars

Before considering a hybrid car, you might want to know a bit about its history. Surprisingly, hybrids were around before gas-powered cars. Around the year 1665 the Jesuit priest Ferdinand Verbeist designed a simple car that would run on steam, but no one knows if it was ever built. Then in 1769 Nicholas Cugnot developed a carriage powered by steam. This car did in fact work, and it could go at six miles per hour. Unfortunately it was difficult to get up sufficient steam for the car to go any reasonable distance.

A break-through in hybrid cars came when Robert Anderson developed an electric powered car in Scotland, 1839, the first of its kind. It was a highly applauded innovation, but it turned out to be very difficult to recharge its battery. Some pioneers followed Anderson, but they had the same problem. Then, in 1898, Porsche came out with an electric and fuel combustion car that was the first of its time. It was called the Lohner Electric Chaise, and it could go up to 40 miles just using batteries.

Soon pioneers combined both a gas and a battery powered engine to power what would become today's hybrid car. And in 1999, Honda made a leap into the US market with its Insight, a lightweight two-door hybrid. Since then, hybrid cars have been evolving and improving into what's on the markets today. But one characteristic remains: hybrid cars started out simple, and they are still delightfully simple today.
